Purpose: To asses the effect of alpha blocker (alfuzosin) in patients with first time painful acute urinary retention secondary to BPO and determine the predictors of failed TWOC.\nMaterial and method: Men above the age of 50 years presenting with a first episode of spontaneous AUR related to BPE underwent emergency catheterization and were assigned to receive 10 mg alfuzosin once daily for 3 days. The primary end point was recatherization after 72 hours of TWOC were assessed. The influence of factors such as age, residual volume, interval between retention and catheterization, functional class and duration of lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) with their grouped frequencies were assessed.\nResults: Total of 104 patients were registered however 4 were excluded giving a total study population of 100. Mean age of the patients was 65.1 +/- 9.5 years. Majority were good functional class I, TWOC was successful in 53% of patients. Correlation between duration of symptoms was inversely proportional to TWOC success (p-value= 0.012). No positive correlation was seen in TWOC vs age, interval between retention and catheterization, residual volume and functional class of the patients. \nCONCLUSIONS: More than half (53%) of the patients receiving single dose of 10mg Alfuzosin had a successful TWOC. Duration of LUTS was significantly inversely proportional to the success of TWOC.

The merger of Fiji School of Medicine with other institutions to form Fiji National University in 2010 produced significant disruption. To determine the impact of this merger on the learning environment of the School during transition, this study analyzed undergraduate Bachelor of Pharmacy students’ perception of the post-merger learning environment. Years 2, 3, and 4 students were studied in February 2014. The 50 items Dundee Ready Educational Environment Measure (DREEM) questionnaire was administered to consenting students, and responses were scored and analyzed. Total scores and scores within subscales were compared across classes, and with reported results from similar studies elsewhere. Problem areas were further analyzed for specific issues. Reliability was established by calculating Cronbach’s alpha coefficient for the total scores. Cronbach’s alpha coefficient was 0.837. Mean total DREEM scores for all participants, 129/200, indicated that students perceived the learning environment “more positive than negative.” Within subscales, students had “more positive perception” of teaching and learning (score 31.3/48). Perception of lecturers (27.1/44) indicated things “moving in the right direction,” academic self-perception (24.9/32) was “confident,” learning atmosphere (29.4/48) was “a more positive attitude,” and social self-perception (17.1/28) was “not too bad.” These findings show that the students had “a more positive perception” of the learning environment across all the classes, and this is comparable to observations from other studies. This probably implies that the merger did not significantly affect the quality of the learning environment as seen by students.

In semi-arid and arid region wastewater is a base line for the agricultural practices. Usage of the Semi-urban wastewater to the agricultural fields served as a nutrient to the crops since the wastewater contains organic wastes, excreta and sludge. Wastewater and sewage sludge, just as manure, have also been used by the northern European and Mediterranean civilizations. However, in Mysuru such usage of treated and untreated wastewater has not been widely investigated. In view of these facts, the present study was analyzed the both primary and secondary parameters to understand actual conditions of the UWW of Mysuru city. This study reveals that, the investigated UWW is suitable for agricultural purposes except Kesare UWW treatment plant with adequate amount of nutrient present in it.

Utilisation of local journal by academic staff of Nigerian universities is an academic obligation that cannot be overlooked because it is an academic task that must be done for academic, teaching, learning, research and self-development purposes. The objectives of the study include the assessment of the level of the utilisation of local journals, proliferation of local journals, identify the problems confronting academic staff in accessing and utilising local journals, recommends possible solution to the identified problems. The research instruments used for the study were questionnaire, observation and interview. One hundred and eighty-five (185) questionnaires were distributed while one hundred and twenty (120) were retrieved and found useful representing 64.9 percent. The methodology used for data analysis was simple percentage and summation weighted index (SWI). The results revealed that frequency usage of local journal was 37.8percent while42.3 percent have access to local journals. However, 62.2 percent indicated proliferation of local journals while 37.8 percent did not agree. Utilisation of local journals for consultation was 22.9 percent for publication of articles 22.3 percent, self-development20.2 percent and 15.6 percent for teaching purposes. Local journals continue to be an important source of information for academic staff in Nigeria. However, there is proliferation of local journals to the detrimental of quality intellectual contents. It was recommended that peer reviewers should be encouraged, make space for advertisement like seminars, workshop, conferences etc, and reviewers should improve their review process for prompt publication.

Utilization of renewable energy resources is of significant importance in the strategy of long-term heat supply development. However, their competitiveness is still low. This paper in general focuses on the economic effectiveness of use of quasi-fully solar heating systems, that can replace the current fossil fuel burning systems mainly in family houses and other similar small buildings.
